Frequently Asked Questions — UK Student Finance & Scholarships

Common questions about funding your UK university education.

Can international students get Student Finance England?

No. Student Finance England is only available to UK Home students and some EU students with settled or pre-settled status who have lived in the UK for at least 3 years. International students must fund their studies through private savings, family support, scholarships, or sponsor funding. LSOE conducts a scholarship audit for all international students.

What is the 28-day rule for student visa proof of funds?

UKVI requires international students to show that the required amount of money (tuition fee balance + living costs) has been held continuously in their bank account for at least 28 days before the date of their visa application. The funds must be in an account in your name or a parent/guardian's name. LSOE advises on which accounts are acceptable and helps you calculate the exact amount required.

Do I have to pay tuition fees upfront in the UK?

UK Home students with Student Finance England do not pay tuition fees upfront. The loan is paid directly to your university by Student Finance England. International students typically pay tuition fees by instalment (usually in two or three payments per academic year). LSOE explains the payment schedule for your specific institution during the application process.

How much do I need to live on as a student in the UK?

Budget approximately £1,200–£1,500/month in London (including accommodation) and £800–£1,100/month in cities like Birmingham, Leeds, Manchester, and Coventry. Costs include accommodation, food, transport, phone, and social activities. LSOE provides a personalised cost breakdown for your chosen city before you commit to a course.

What happens to my student loan if I drop out?

If you withdraw from your course, your tuition fee loan will cover fees up to the point of withdrawal. Your maintenance loan payments stop. You begin repaying both loans only once you are earning above £25,000/year — the same repayment rules apply regardless. LSOE advises on the financial implications before any withdrawal decision.

Can I get a scholarship without good grades?

Some scholarships are needs-based rather than merit-based, meaning your financial situation is assessed rather than your academic results. University bursaries for widening participation, care leavers, and students from low-income households are examples. LSOE identifies all funding options available to you regardless of your academic profile.
